Wireless network (wireless LAN or WLAN) is a local network created between two or more computers without cables. Network transfers data by radio waves. The distance of wireless network is limited. It depends on used hardware (router). Manufacturer usually declares a functioning distance of 100 – 300 meters. Inside this distance reduces three times. Wireless networks (Wireless LAN) provide users with possibility to carry computer to a new place and to be connected to the network. It is an important advantage against cable networks.

At the moment almost all Internet providers in UK offer free wireless modem. It means anywhere at home you can connect a few computers which can use Internet.

If you want to use wireless Internet, you need a couple of things. First of all, you must have functioning Internet connection. Router, which splits Internet connection to computers, is necessary. Moreover, you should know that a wireless adaptor has to be built in computer also. New notebooks have these wireless adaptors. If you have desktop computer or older notebook, then you will have to buy an extra USB wireless adaptor. Safety of wireless network is very important. It is necessary to configure it when wireless Internet is connected. If wireless network is not protected, all people living around can connect to your Internet. They load your network and use it for free.

A location of antenna has a strong impact on wireless network signal strength. Signal spreads sideways from antenna. The biggest mistake is made when antenna is pointed straight at computer. Then signal spreads sideways and it is weakly caught.
